“111-Year-Old Credits Wine and Sweets for Longevity”

    Published on

A 111-year-old man has shared the keys to his longevity, attributing his remarkable lifespan to indulging in wine and sweets. Zhan Changcheng, a resident of Wanyao Village in southern Shanghai, China, was born on March 17, 1914. Despite living through numerous historical events and 76 years of communist rule, Zhan remains active and enjoys engaging in walks and card games with friends.

With nine children, including three sons and six daughters aged between 59 and 82, Zhan’s family spans four generations, all living together harmoniously. His 72-year-old second son, Zhan Yingtong, and his 69-year-old youngest son, Zhan Yingqin, along with their partners, take turns caring for him.

Yingtong described his father as meticulous about personal hygiene, highlighting his habit of brushing his teeth thrice daily and his early morning routine. Zhan’s preference for sweetened food, including sweetened white rice, is well-known within the family, with his daughter-in-law sharing anecdotes of his sweet-tooth tendencies.

Despite his fondness for sweets, Zhan maintains good health, as evidenced by his stable blood sugar levels and regular medical check-ups. Apart from his dietary habits, Zhan devoted more than five decades to bamboo weaving, earning a reputation as a skilled weaver in the region and mentoring numerous apprentices.

The centenarian also values social connections, frequently meeting with friends who share his passion for weaving. While he used to be a heavy smoker, Zhan quit smoking a few years ago at the urging of his family, although he continues to carry a packet of cigarettes to offer to others he encounters.

Yingtong emphasized his father’s simple and contented lifestyle, devoid of extravagance. Despite his age, Zhan remains an active member of his community, surrounded by several other elderly residents in Wanyao Village, where he is recognized as the second oldest person in China, following Zhou Renqing, who is set to turn 112 in November.

The village boasts 22 residents over 90 years old, with two surpassing the age of 100. Zhan’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration, showcasing the importance of lifestyle choices and social connections in promoting longevity.
