All Departing Flights Halted at Washington DC Airport Due to Alleged Bomb Threat
In a recent security scare, all departing flights were brought to a standstill at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington DC following reports of a potential bomb threat. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the temporary suspension, which lasted for over an hour from 11:18 am ET.
Passengers witnessed an unusual scene as they were escorted off an airplane parked on the runway, with the FAA ensuring the plane was relocated away from the terminal area as a precautionary measure.
Although flight operations have now resumed at the airport, there are significant delays, with departing flights experiencing an average delay of 51 minutes and some facing delays exceeding two hours.
The reported threat specifically targeted a United Airlines flight UA512 arriving from Houston IAD, as per AirLive sources. The aircraft, identified as a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was promptly moved to a safe location away from other planes for further investigation by authorities.
The FAA, the regulatory body overseeing civil aviation safety in the United States, has released an official statement addressing the security incident at the airport.
A video footage captured by CBS affiliate WUSA displayed a notable police presence on the runway near a United Airlines plane. CNN correspondent Pete Muntean highlighted that the flight disruptions were triggered by a bomb threat incident.
Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 indicated that the flight suspension was prompted by an unverified threat involving a United Airlines aircraft, which was swiftly segregated from other planes on the airport premises.
The security situation led to a complete pause of all flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport starting from 11:18 am ET, following an official security emergency declaration issued at 11:30 am ET.
