Anthony Joshua has returned to the UK following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two of his friends. The British heavyweight boxer arrived at London Stansted Airport on Friday evening and was subsequently transported to his residence for further recovery, as per reports from The Sun.
The funerals of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, are scheduled to take place at a mosque in London, with a ‘janaza prayer service’ being arranged for them. While there are plans for family and friends to attend the service, Joshua remains undecided on whether he will be present, as there are concerns that his attendance could generate unwanted attention.
Joshua narrowly avoided the fatal crash by swapping seats just before the journey commenced, which unfortunately led to the loss of his friends’ lives. Following the incident, the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Kayode’s lawyer stated that the accident was unforeseen, citing alleged brake failure as a contributing factor.
The collision occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when Kayode’s vehicle struck a stationary truck. After being discharged from the hospital, Kayode was questioned and provided an official statement regarding the events leading up to the crash. His trial has been adjourned until January 20.
In the aftermath of the accident, Joshua paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom. The boxer, who was discharged from the hospital in Lagos, is now recuperating at his home in Nigeria.
