Half a million bees are creating a buzz at a farm in southwestern Ontario, offering visitors a unique way to unwind and destress. At Diana Graham’s 28-hectare farm in the Comber area, Bees and Bloom Wellness provides bee bed therapy inside a cozy hut. Underneath two wooden beds lie four beehives, separated from clients by screens as they lay down to experience the therapy.
Advocates of this therapy claim it can help alleviate anxiety and stress, although there is a lack of concrete scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness. Graham asserts that being surrounded by bees while sleeping is therapeutic. Visitors have reported feeling amazed and experiencing improved breathing after exposure to bee pheromones. The setup ensures the safety of clients from potential bee stings.
According to Graham, the pheromones emitted by the bees offer benefits to the immune system, lungs, and mental well-being. The gentle buzz of the bees is believed to aid in alleviating anxiety, depression, PTSD, sleep disorders, and overall health. The air in the cabin carries the soothing scents of honey and beeswax, enhancing the wellness experience.
Similar bee bed therapy centers are emerging across Canada. Visitors to Graham’s farm have shared positive feedback about their experiences, noting a significant reduction in anxiety levels. Christine Brady from Petrolia and Annette Bourassa from Barrie have praised the therapy for its relaxing and therapeutic effects.
The cost for a 60-minute session at Graham’s farm ranges from $85 for one person to $300 for a group of four to six individuals. Known as “the queen bee” among her friends, Graham diligently manages the hives and collaborates with experts like Paul O’Neill in Ireland, who pioneered the concept of bee beds.
Bee bed therapy, although gaining popularity, lacks substantial scientific backing regarding its mental health benefits. Researcher Yanki Tandircioglu from Turkey has delved into the effects of bee bed therapy on anxiety levels. Her study showed that exposure to bee buzzing sounds effectively reduced participants’ anxiety levels, shedding light on the potential therapeutic value of bee bed therapy.
While bee bed therapy continues to be a novel field of research with limited scholarly support, proponents emphasize the unique healing properties of bees and the serene environment they create. Nature’s innate ability to heal, coupled with the calming presence of bees, contributes to a holistic and relaxing experience for individuals seeking respite from their daily stresses.
