One day, while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect,” a contestant casually mentioned entering an international whistling contest. Intrigued, I quickly signed up myself and my youngest daughter, Sumire, to the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list after a brief Google search.
Initially, I didn’t take the contest seriously, as I tend to view things with a touch of irony. However, it seemed like a fun opportunity to spend time with Sumire amid the pandemic. To my surprise, we both had a knack for whistling, a skill passed down from my parents to me and now to Sumire.
When the contest organizers invited audition tapes, we recorded one for fun. To our astonishment, we received confirmation that we made the cut. The realization that the competition was to be held in person in Los Angeles took me by surprise. The Masters of Musical Whistling aimed to showcase whistling as a serious art form, with participants vying for the World Champion title.
To prepare, we booked a coaching session with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Her feedback on our audition tapes was eye-opening, highlighting the need to hone our skills for a live audience.
Motivated to set a good example for Sumire, we embarked on a rigorous training regime, practicing whistling daily. With determination and the help of accumulated travel points, we found ourselves in Hollywood ready to compete.
The competition venue exuded grandeur, setting the stage for the 2023 Master of Musical Whistling event. Surrounded by exceptionally talented contestants from around the globe, we marveled at their skills and dedication. Each participant brought a unique flair to their performances, showcasing whistling as a true art form.
As we took the stage, Sumire impressed with a rendition of the “Doraemon” theme, earning a silver medal in the kids’ category. I followed suit with a performance of “It’s Not a Moon,” clinching gold in the level one adults category. The experience was more meaningful than I had anticipated, shedding light on the importance of embracing genuine passion over irony.
The competition not only brought personal fulfillment but also highlighted the value of wholeheartedly pursuing what matters most.
