Anthony Joshua’s driver faces charges in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s friends. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, has been accused of reckless and dangerous driving following the collision involving a black Lexus Jeep on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The incident resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Kayode was recently discharged from a hospital in Lagos and subsequently taken to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state for further proceedings.
After being questioned for several hours and providing an official statement about the events leading up to the crash, Adeniyi was declared wanted by police but has since been charged and granted bail by the Sagamu Magistrate Court. The charges include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license. The case has been adjourned until January 20.
Anthony Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, has been discharged from the hospital. He attended a funeral home to pay his respects to Ghami and Ayodele before their repatriation to the UK. The police investigation revealed that the crash was triggered by a tire blowout due to excessive speeding.
In a touching tribute, Eddie Hearn and other members of the boxing community expressed condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele. Mourners gathered outside Ghami’s gym in London to honor the memory of the departed individuals. The tragic incident occurred shortly after Joshua’s recent fight with Jake Paul, where he emerged victorious and called for a potential showdown with Tyson Fury.
The planned match between Joshua and Fury may face delays following the unfortunate events in Nigeria. Frank Warren, a veteran boxing promoter, acknowledged the impact of the crash on Joshua and expressed uncertainties about the timeline for a potential fight between the two heavyweight champions.
