AI’s Positive Impact on Learning in a Safe Environment
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents to stay abreast of the rapid changes. In today’s digital landscape, families are assisting their children in navigating a world saturated with AI, from social media to schoolwork and relationships, as underscored by the recent observance of Safer Internet Day.
Given the difficulty in discerning reality online, ensuring children’s safety in the digital realm is paramount. To address this concern, for the year 2026, we have collaborated with Tesco Mobile, a supporter of Safer Internet Day, to promote discussions within families through The Family Chat initiative. The aim is to facilitate open and honest dialogues at home about online safety, making the topic less overwhelming.
Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, will engage with parents and children to discuss the challenges they face. The inaugural discussion focuses on AI and emphasizes the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in assisting parents with children of all age groups up to 18.
The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby, acknowledges their reliance on devices for connectivity. However, the parents admit their struggle to grasp AI concepts, which can be a drawback in ensuring safety. Anna candidly admits her difficulty in distinguishing AI-generated content, often mistaking it for real, a sentiment echoed by her children.
AI’s pervasive presence, particularly on platforms like TikTok, where realistic AI content abounds, adds to the challenge. With homework increasingly shifting to online platforms utilizing AI-generated resources, both the Karley family and Giovanna are navigating this new educational landscape.
Giovanna notes the prevalence of computer-based homework for her eldest child in secondary school. She emphasizes the importance of not demonizing AI but rather evaluating its usage continually to ensure optimal outcomes.
To guide children in using AI safely, here are some key recommendations:
1. Explore AI collaboratively as a family to discover its capabilities.
2. Encourage fact-checking and critical thinking as AI can be fallible.
3. Adhere to age restrictions and review privacy settings on AI platforms.
4. Educate children on discerning reality from misinformation online.
5. Utilize AI as a tool for inspiration rather than a shortcut, promoting creativity and problem-solving skills.
The Karley family appreciates the support provided by Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, which offers valuable resources and toolkits for discussing AI safety. The platform includes age-specific tips for parents, developed in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre, along with engaging AI quizzes for the family.
Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub has streamlined the Karley family’s discussions on online safety, enabling them to enhance their understanding and support for their children. Emmanuel expresses gratitude for the newfound knowledge and collaborative learning experience facilitated by the platform.
The proactive approach to promoting safe AI usage underscores the importance of fostering a secure digital environment for families and children.
