In her childhood days in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series based on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she and her grandmother would tune in to watch “Road to Avonlea,” with actress Mag Ruffman’s portrayal of Aunt Olivia leaving a lasting impression on her young mind.

Years later, upon learning of Ruffman’s attendance at a fan convention dedicated to the show on P.E.I., Czajka eagerly secured a ticket to the event. Reflecting on her admiration for Ruffman, she described her as a childhood idol akin to a Disney princess, leading her to convince her husband to accompany her to P.E.I. for the convention.

Devotees of “Road to Avonlea” converged on the Island from various corners of the globe to partake in the sold-out event. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcast in over 100 countries, debuted in 1990 and concluded its seven-season run in 1996.

Centered around the life of Sarah Stanley, portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, the show depicted her journey living with her late mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series gained international acclaim for its storytelling.

The convention spanned three days and featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, as well as panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also embarked on tours to iconic filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the renowned Cavendish house that served as inspiration for “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the organizing body behind the convention, emphasized the enduring appeal of the show, noting its ability to evoke a sense of escapism and values like kindness and friendship.

Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, expressed gratitude for the fans’ unwavering enthusiasm and emotional connection to the show. She shared her occasional musings on the character of Olivia and the lasting impact of portraying her over the years.

Czajka, now rewatching the series with her own children, highlighted the rarity of finding a show that resonates across generations, underscoring the timeless quality of “Road to Avonlea” and its enduring significance in her family’s viewing experience.
