Growing up in the Philippines, I had never experienced the thrill of watching a full hockey game until the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was during the intense final match against the U.S. when Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal in overtime that I was captivated by the sport. Witnessing the nationwide celebration that ensued in Canada after the victory was a sight to behold, with jubilant car honks and people singing “O Canada” everywhere.
Having recently moved to Canada from the Philippines, the magnitude of how hockey could unite an entire nation amazed me. As I settled into my new life, I found myself gradually drawn to the sport, noticing hockey jerseys and enthusiastic cheers around me. Eventually, I made it a point to learn more about hockey, adding it to my list of things to explore as a new immigrant.
In 2014, I attended my first live hockey game, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks. The energy in the arena was electric, and I felt a sense of belonging amidst the sea of orange-clad fans cheering for the Oilers. This experience marked the beginning of my appreciation for hockey and its significance in Canadian culture.
As I delved deeper into the hockey scene in Edmonton, I realized the sport’s profound impact on the city’s identity. Colleagues sporting Oilers’ jerseys at work and discussions about the intense “Battle of Alberta” rivalry further illustrated the sport’s importance in everyday life. I discovered that hockey transcends being just a game in Canada; it is deeply ingrained in the culture and holds immense significance for its people.
Embracing my newfound interest in hockey, I started following games on TV and collecting memorabilia like Oilers’ towels to show my support. Over time, hockey became more than just a sport to me—it became a part of my Canadian identity. Engaging in conversations about hockey with colleagues and immersing myself in the game’s excitement made me feel like a true member of the community.
In 2016, I relocated to Vancouver and met Mike, a passionate hockey fan who reignited my love for the sport. Our shared enthusiasm for hockey brought us closer together, with Saturday night hockey games and special dinners becoming cherished traditions in our relationship. Despite our differing backgrounds and interests, we embraced each other’s passions, creating a harmonious balance in our dynamic.
Through Mike’s guidance, I gained a deeper understanding of hockey, familiarizing myself with terms like cherry-picking and icing. Our shared love for sports extended beyond hockey, as I introduced him to the world of tennis, sharing in the excitement of Grand Slam tournaments and tennis events. Our mutual respect for each other’s interests strengthened our bond, emphasizing the beauty of embracing diversity in a relationship.
Attending hockey games together at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a shared experience that we both cherished. As Canucks and Oilers fans, we proudly donned our respective jerseys, showcasing our unity despite supporting rival teams. Our love for hockey symbolized the harmony and understanding that defined our relationship, proving that love transcends differences.
From my initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Winter Olympics to my present-day passion for the sport, my journey with hockey has been transformative. It has not only connected me to Canadian culture but also sparked meaningful conversations, fostered relationships, and enriched my understanding of what it means to be Canadian. My personal experience with hockey reflects the profound impact this sport can have on individuals and communities alike.
