“Rare Otter Sighting Delights Wetland Visitors”

    Published on

Wildlife enthusiast Terry Chettle captured a captivating moment at Grimsby Wetlands in early August while photographing a green heron. An unexpected visitor, a river otter, appeared and engaged in playful antics with the heron, much to Chettle’s surprise. Seizing the opportunity, Chettle snapped a photo of the otter as it perched on a log, showing off with a playful gesture.

On the same day, Bruce and Laurie Mackenzie, while strolling through the wetland, crossed paths with Chettle, who pointed out the rare otter sighting. Bruce Mackenzie noted the rarity of the otter in the area, mentioning that this particular sighting on August 3 seemed to be the first in recent memory near the wetlands. The wetlands, previously a site for sewage disposal by the Niagara Region, are now managed by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, covering approximately 12 hectares along Lake Ontario’s South Shore. Mackenzie, involved with the naturalists club as a project manager for the wetlands, highlighted the significance of the otter sighting in showcasing successful habitat restoration and improved water quality.

Otters symbolize a conservation triumph, as Laura Timms, a program manager at Credit Valley Conservation specializing in natural heritage management, emphasized. She discussed the resurgence of river otters in the Credit River watershed, encompassing a significant portion of Mississauga and Peel Region. Timms highlighted an article from 2025 detailing the comeback of river otters in the region, indicating a positive trend in otter sightings. She mentioned that documented otter sightings have become more frequent, with some otters even giving birth to offspring at conservation areas this year, such as the Rattray Marsh and Jim Tovey Lakeview sites.

Despite the positive otter population trend, challenges persist for biodiversity conservation. Timms stressed the importance of preserving diverse habitats, especially wetlands, which play a vital role in supporting various species, mitigating flooding, and storing carbon. She urged continued efforts in habitat restoration and protection to enable all species to thrive, underscoring the need for more success stories in conservation akin to the resurgence of otters.
