A three-year-old British girl tragically passed away in England after spending 12 days in a hospital following an incident at a hotel swimming pool in Lardos, Rhodes, Greece. The young child, identified as Matilda, was on holiday with her family when she was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool. Reports indicate that her uncle, who was responsible for supervising her, allegedly left her unattended for approximately 10 minutes.
Despite efforts by a British doctor who was present at the scene to rescue Matilda and provide CPR, she remained in critical condition. She was initially treated at the General Hospital of Rhodes, then transferred to Crete, and finally airlifted back to England, where she ultimately passed away.
Following the incident, the child’s uncle and a 54-year-old manager from a travel agency linked to the hotel were arrested by authorities. They, along with the 57-year-old hotel owner and the hotel’s director, are now facing charges related to the tragic death. A police investigation is ongoing, with CCTV footage being reviewed to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to initial findings, safety measures at the hotel were reportedly lacking, with no lifeguard on duty, no rescue equipment near the pool, and no designated supervisor present during the incident. Legal arguments have been made on behalf of the uncle and the hotel manager, claiming that they were not directly responsible for the child’s well-being due to various reasons.
Medical professionals had informed the family early on that the child’s brain injury was irreversible, leading to a devastating outcome. The hospital’s director described Matilda as “brain dead” due to the extended period she had spent in the water before being rescued. The community has been deeply saddened by this tragic event, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
