“From Engineering to Cowboy: Embracing an Unconventional Path to Success”

    Published on

Growing up, the conventional path to success was ingrained in me: pursue higher education, secure a job in your field, start a family, own a home, and raise children. This narrative, passed down from my parents and reinforced by the high school counselor, outlined the recipe for a fulfilling life. Following this trajectory, I was on track in 2016 as I wrapped up my second year studying biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph.

Initially aiming to land a summer engineering job in Ontario to enhance my resume, my plans took an unexpected turn when I accepted a position at a horseback trail riding facility in Banff National Park. Despite deviating from my predetermined route to success, I felt confident in my ability to excel in this role due to my extensive experience riding horses on my family’s farm in southern Ontario.

In Banff, I relished in exploring the rugged Rockies on horseback, fulfilling my childhood dream of riding in the mountains. As a guide, I led guests through pine forests, drove horse teams along the Bow River, and escorted visitors to elk-populated wildflower meadows.

My perspective on a fulfilling life evolved during this time. Rather than conforming to a traditional corporate career path, I learned to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, from serene mornings to post-shift tea by the fire after a long, rainy day. Moreover, my seasonal work introduced me to a diverse array of individuals, from career breakers in their late twenties to international travelers funding their adventures through seasonal jobs.

The friendships forged during my time as a trail guide hold a special place in my heart, unlike any other connections from school or my current desk job. Living and working closely with colleagues for months on end created deep, enduring bonds. Some of my closest friends to this day are individuals I met in Banff, like Katie and Phil from Australia, who even celebrated a white Christmas with my family in Ontario.

While bidding farewell to these friends at the end of each season was always challenging, the enriching experiences and relationships outweighed the temporary nature of seasonal work. This unconventional path taught me that success comes in various forms and can involve career breaks, changes, or unexpected twists.

After pursuing my cowgirl dreams at a ranch in Cranbrook, B.C., following my engineering degree, I transitioned into international sales, a role that allows me to continue exploring the world. The self-reliance and adaptability I honed as a guide have proven invaluable in my current position, even as I occasionally yearn for the simplicity of life in the mountains with horses.

While my past self may have been dismayed at straying from the engineering field, present me cherishes the life I’ve crafted by following my passions. The unconventional journey through seasonal work has reshaped my definition of success and encouraged me to embrace new experiences wholeheartedly. Ultimately, seasonal work taught me that life is about exploration, embracing change, and reveling in the joy of new adventures.
