“Rock Star Tribute: New Snake Species Named After Slash”

    Published on

A recently discovered groundsnake from New Guinea has been named Lielaphis slashi by scientists at the Field Museum in Chicago, in tribute to the renowned Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash. The approximately 71-centimeter reddish-brown reptile is now formally recognized as Slash’s groundsnake. Slash, known for his love of reptiles, was described by the Field Museum as a devoted reptile enthusiast and a supporter of zoos and museums.

Expressing his gratitude, Slash mentioned feeling honored and humbled by having a snake species named after him. The fieldwork leading to the identification of Slash’s groundsnake was initiated in 2006 by Chris Austin, a herpetology professor at Louisiana State University’s Museum of Natural Science, during research in New Guinea.

The island of New Guinea, with its rich biodiversity, remains a challenging environment for scientists due to its dense forests and various species of snakes. Unlike more conspicuous animals, snakes often remain hidden and motionless, making them difficult to locate. Despite its inconspicuous appearance, genetic testing confirmed that Lielaphis slashi is a distinct species within its genus.

Conservationists have expressed concerns about the habitat of Slash’s groundsnake being threatened by activities such as coffee farming and mining. Naming the snake after Slash not only pays homage to the rock star but also raises awareness about the importance of understanding and preserving the ecosystem it inhabits.

Slash’s groundsnake poses no threat to humans, as it primarily preys on small lizards and reptile eggs using its enlarged teeth rather than venom or constriction. This naming initiative serves as a reminder of the critical role snakes play in the ecosystem and encourages appreciation for these fascinating creatures.
