“Unifor Begins Talks with GM for New Labor Agreement”

    Published on

Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, starting negotiations at a central Toronto bargaining table on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members at various GM facilities in Ontario, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.

Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, and Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, commenced the talks with a handshake to signify the beginning of the discussions. Chairs were arranged in the conference room where officials were seated at opposite ends, with Payne positioned in the middle and Uppal directly across from her.

Payne expressed optimism, stating, “We’re commencing this next round of negotiations on the foundation established by the agreement with Ford, and we aim to engage in substantive discussions regarding company operations and the future of automotive jobs at GM in Canada.”

The union has set a target deadline of August 21 to achieve a tentative agreement with GM. Uppal emphasized GM’s respect for the collective bargaining process and the crucial role played by its employees in the company’s success. He highlighted GM’s substantial investments in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, totaling $3.3 billion, which are expected to secure numerous Canadian jobs in the foreseeable future.

In a separate development, Unifor recently approved a new three-year contract with Ford, including three percent annual pay raises and program commitments across all Ford facilities. The agreement also outlined a special program for laid-off workers from Ford’s Oakville assembly plant, providing a pathway to full employment by July 2027.

The successful negotiations with Ford set a pattern for Unifor, a strategy where terms negotiated with one company are intended to be replicated with others in the same sector. The agreement with Ford was widely supported by Ford workers, as it delivered key gains in wage increases and job security.

Looking ahead, Payne acknowledged potential challenges in negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis, citing differences in decision-making amid trade uncertainties in Canada. Despite these complexities, Unifor is committed to advocating for the automotive industry amidst various challenges, including U.S. tariffs, trade agreements, and the rise of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada.
