Moroccan authorities apprehended over 111 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, amidst heightened security measures following social media calls for another large-scale migrant crossing. This incident occurred following a previous influx of more than 72,000 migrants into Ceuta, which stirred tensions within the European Union and fueled anti-immigrant sentiments among far-right groups globally, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 96 lives.
Reports from Morocco’s Interior Ministry revealed that among those detained were 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan nationals in or near Fnideq, the Moroccan city opposite Ceuta. Spanish news agency EFE disclosed that Moroccan police utilized tear gas to disperse migrant groups gathered on hills approximately three kilometers from the border. Subsequently, a significant police presence, including officers in riot gear and civilian clothing, was observed returning from the hills outside Fnideq.
In Ceuta, Spanish military personnel guarded supermarkets, while police maintained a heavy presence on the enclave’s main streets. The city appeared relatively calm compared to the aftermath of the previous border crossing attempt. Madrid took swift action by erecting a maritime barrier and deploying over 500 additional police officers from mainland Spain, boosting the total security force in Ceuta to more than 1,600, with plans for sustained reinforcement as necessary.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the commitment to restore normalcy and prevent future incidents like the July 30 crossing attempt. Despite around 5,000 migrants still present in Ceuta, Grande-Marlaska clarified that irregular entrants would not be permitted to remain, travel to mainland Spain, or obtain legal residency, except in extreme vulnerability cases. Those lacking legal status would be repatriated to Morocco.
Security measures were intensified near the border, with reports of police vans equipped with wire shields and road checkpoints. Authorities thwarted several groups from departing to northern Morocco via trains and buses in cities such as Casablanca, Fez, and Kenitra. Nonetheless, witnesses noted that some sub-Saharan African migrants circumvented security checkpoints by utilizing mountain routes towards Fnideq.
Amidst these developments, young individuals who entered Ceuta on July 30 were seen engaging in leisure activities at Tarajal beach, urging caution to potential crossers. Driss Sadik, a 22-year-old who swam for hours to reach Ceuta, advised against attempting the crossing due to the ensuing hardships. Adil Jamil, 17, echoed this sentiment, warning of the futility of such endeavors and emphasizing the challenges faced by those attempting the journey. Jamil highlighted the organized nature of these mass crossings, emphasizing the collective approach adopted by participants in seeking a better future.
