Residents in Regina have recently reported multiple sightings of coyotes in local parks, causing concern among some community members. Scott Paton, a frequent visitor to Les Sherman Park, encountered a curious coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. Despite the close proximity, the coyote did not display aggression but rather seemed interested in its surroundings. Paton, unfazed by the encounter, continued on his walk and warned others in the park about the animal’s presence.

While Paton remains nonchalant about the coyote, not all residents share his sentiment, particularly those in the Cathedral neighborhood. Reports on Facebook have detailed numerous encounters with coyotes in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Witnesses describe instances where the coyotes approached people and their pets, with one individual recounting being chased and circled by a coyote in Les Sherman Park.

City Councilor David Froh also had a firsthand experience with a coyote during a morning run in Les Sherman Park. Froh emphasized the importance of public safety when dealing with persistent wildlife sightings, noting that immediate action is necessary in such cases. The City of Regina has acknowledged the reports and is collaborating with conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the coyotes.

Froh reassured residents that coyote sightings, while disconcerting, are not uncommon in the city and urged the community to prioritize the safety of both pets and wildlife. He emphasized the need to report any sightings of wild animals that may pose a risk to public safety. In response to the coyote presence, the city is taking measures to ensure the safety of both residents and the animals involved.
