“Protests Erupt in Syria over Death of Detained Man”

    Published on

Syrian citizens protested this week demanding justice for the death of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian man who passed away in the hospital following alleged mistreatment by security forces during his detention. This incident occurred less than two years after the new government pledged to end the widespread arbitrary detentions and abuse that were prevalent under the previous regime.

The family of Ghamira informed the police that he suffered from hemophilia, a rare genetic condition that affects blood clotting, which can result in prolonged bleeding. He was detained for three days before being released on August 9 and immediately taken to the hospital, where he passed away a week later.

Ghamira’s death has become a critical test for Syria’s new government to demonstrate its commitment to accountability following the end of the decades-long authoritarian rule of the Assad dynasty. The incident led to peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins across the country, shedding light on numerous reports of alleged mistreatment in detention centers since the new administration assumed power.

Fadel Abdulghany, the executive director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), highlighted the need for systematic accountability in cases like Ghamira’s to ensure a fair and just transition in Syria.

Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained on suspicion of theft by the Latakia Internal Security Command. Despite his family’s warnings about his medical condition, he was reportedly subjected to physical abuse while in custody, leading to his tragic demise at the Latakia University Hospital.

The Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, mourned Ghamira’s death and emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law in Syria.

Following Ghamira’s burial, the Syrian Interior Ministry announced an investigation into his death and detained seven ministry personnel for questioning. The head of the investigating committee revealed that Ghamira’s demise resulted from complications from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by physical assault during interrogation.

While the internal investigation is ongoing, rights groups like the Syria Campaign and Families for Freedom are demanding an independent and transparent probe, systemic reforms to prevent future abuses, and greater oversight of detention facilities to ensure accountability and justice for victims.

Despite the government’s promises of accountability, reports from organizations like Syrians for Truth and Justice indicate that abuses persist in detention centers, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms to address systemic issues and prevent further mistreatment of detainees.
