In a thrilling race at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham, Marcus Ericsson’s impressive victory was marked by two crucial passes. Initially, Ericsson and his teammate Will Power had a minor collision as Ericsson made a strategic move late in the race. Then, with just four laps remaining on the Markham street circuit, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean to secure his fifth win in the IndyCar series.
Expressing his satisfaction, Ericsson attributed the victory to their exceptional speed on the track, highlighting their strategic gameplay and timely execution. Romain Grosjean finished in second place, achieving his first top-five finish of the season, while Will Power secured the third spot. The current driver standings leader, Alex Palou, crossed the finish line in fourth place.
Notably, Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who is currently second in the driver standings, all belong to the Andretti Global team. When Kirkwood crashed out of the race, the team strategically aimed to disrupt Palou’s progress to prevent him from accumulating more points and sealing his fifth IndyCar title.
Despite some miscommunication leading to a brief incident between Power and Ericsson during the race, the team remained focused on the larger objective of maximizing their points and standings position. Palou gained 32 points in the race, widening his lead over Kirkwood by 133 points in the championship standings.
Grosjean, who has yet to secure an IndyCar victory since transitioning from Formula One, faced challenges with fuel and tire management towards the end of the race. Despite his efforts to defend his position, Ericsson’s calculated move ultimately enabled him to overtake Grosjean and claim the lead.
The race witnessed several intense moments, with multiple cars forced off the track due to collisions, resulting in six caution periods. The event marked the first year of Markham hosting the only IndyCar race in Canada, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after a long tenure. Despite initial challenges with the track’s completion, the drivers and fans embraced the new circuit layout, promising a smoother race experience in the future.
Louis Foster set the pace in practice and qualifying, securing his first pole of the season but faced an early exit from the race due to a crash. The eventful race showcased the competitive spirit and challenges faced by drivers on the Markham street circuit, setting the stage for future thrilling races at the venue.
