“Unifor Warns Stellantis: Value Canadian Workers in Negotiations”

    Published on

Unifor, the union representing employees at Stellantis, has cautioned the U.S. automaker against undervaluing Canadian workers as contract negotiations with the company commenced. Unifor’s talks with Stellantis signify the final phase of bargaining with the Detroit Three automakers, employing a pattern bargaining strategy to establish terms for negotiations with other firms.

Despite recently securing collective agreements with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors in Canada, Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, highlighted the impending challenges. Payne acknowledged defying odds amidst uncertainties, tariffs, and trade wars, emphasizing the anticipated difficulty of the ongoing negotiations.

With a deadline of Sept. 11 looming, the primary focus of the negotiations revolves around job security following the layoff of over 2,000 workers at Stellantis’ Brampton, Ont., plant, which has remained inactive since 2023. Recent developments suggested the potential closure and sale of the factory, triggering concerns within the union due to violations of the existing collective agreement.

Unifor reiterated its stance that relocating Jeep Compass production from the Brampton plant was a misguided decision, asserting the need for Stellantis to rectify the situation and prioritize Canadian employees’ interests. Stellantis acknowledged the significance of the labor discussions for its future, amid industry transformations and regulatory challenges.

Amidst the backdrop of U.S. tariffs impacting local automakers, Unifor emphasized the importance of safeguarding Canada’s auto sector. The union warned against the detrimental effects of escalating tariffs on the North American auto industry, stressing the need for resilience in the face of threats.

Larry Savage, a labor studies professor, highlighted Unifor’s dual efforts to secure production in Canada and resist potential trade agreements jeopardizing the industry. The ongoing negotiations are pivotal for the auto sector’s sustainability and maintaining fair agreements, crucial for long-term collaboration between the union and Stellantis.
