Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc recently engaged in a lengthy meeting with American officials in Washington to finalize a deal aimed at providing tariff relief for Canadian industries and allowing U.S. alcohol sales in province-run liquor stores. The closed-door meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump’s top trade official, Jamieson Greer, yielded positive developments, although specific details were not disclosed.
LeBlanc emphasized the importance of reaching an economic agreement that benefits Canada and its workforce, noting significant progress in ongoing negotiations. Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum are set to decrease from 50% to 25%, with further talks on derivatives and exemptions underway. Additionally, a quota system will be implemented for lower steel tariffs to regulate import volumes at the reduced rate.
The anticipated deal includes a reduction in Trump’s tariff rates on Canadian-made vehicles from 25% to 15%, potentially halving the effective rate for non-U.S. vehicle components. In exchange for these tariff adjustments, the U.S. seeks the resumption of American alcohol sales in Canadian liquor stores and the removal of provincial barriers for U.S. firms bidding on government contracts.
While some provincial leaders expressed support for the trade negotiations, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew raised concerns about dealing with President Trump, advocating for a more confrontational approach. Despite reservations, Kinew acknowledged the necessity of restoring U.S. liquor sales as part of the agreement under negotiation.
Other premiers, such as Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston and Quebec’s Christine Fréchette, engaged in discussions with Trade Minister LeBlanc and expressed varying levels of satisfaction with the proposed terms. British Columbia Premier David Eby echoed support for advancing Canada’s economic interests through diversified trade partnerships and emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to enhance the nation’s economic resilience.
