A global coalition of soccer fan organizations initiated a petition on Thursday demanding the resignation of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president following his proposal to sell off future World Cup revenues to private investors. The petition, featuring the hashtag #InfantinOut, also advocates for a reconstruction of FIFA to prevent such controversies from reoccurring.

The fan groups involved, including Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and the Independent Supporters Council in North America, along with approximately 40 national fan groups worldwide, united against Infantino’s scheme to commercialize the World Cup, which he eventually abandoned in response to intense criticism.

Despite facing opposition from various soccer bodies like UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has remained defiant against calls for his resignation. The petition denounces his leadership as a failure, pointing to issues such as centralizing power around the FIFA Presidency, lack of transparency in decision-making, and a lack of accountability, eroding trust in the governing body.

The petition emphasizes the need for Infantino to step down for the credibility of FIFA and the integrity of the sport, citing his controversial support for initiatives like the European Super League and the proposal to host World Cups biennially.
