Melissa Humana-Paredes rarely has the opportunity to compete in beach volleyball on Canadian soil. However, when she does, Montréal has proven to be a favorable location for her performance. Returning to Parc Jean-Drapeau from Aug. 19-23 for the Montréal Elite16, Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson aim to continue their success from last year’s championship win.
Their victory in the 2025 event against Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann, with a score of 21-15, 22-20 in straight sets, marked their first title together. Humana-Paredes expressed her gratitude for the chance to compete at home, emphasizing the enthusiastic support of Montréal sports fans.
The pair is already looking ahead to their next challenge – the LA 2028 Olympics. Despite the event being two years away, preparations have begun as Olympic qualifications start in 2027. Humana-Paredes highlighted the importance of staying focused on the present while keeping the long-term goal in mind.
In their journey towards LA 2028, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson have returned to their foundational training methods. Reuniting with their former coaching staff in Los Angeles, they have seen positive results, including a gold medal at the Elite16 event in Ostrava, Czechia.
Their recent achievements, including an Olympic silver medal in Paris, serve as stepping stones towards future success. Humana-Paredes emphasized that every experience and medal contributes to their growth and preparation for upcoming challenges.
Looking forward, an LA Olympics holds special significance for Humana-Paredes, who has trained extensively in Los Angeles throughout her career. She views the city as a second home and anticipates competing in an environment where beach volleyball is deeply appreciated by the community.
As they continue their journey to LA, Humana-Paredes recognizes the importance of enjoying the present moment, especially the opportunity to compete in front of their fellow Canadians in Montréal. This stop in their Olympic quest serves as a reminder of the support and passion for beach volleyball in their home country.
