“Study Reveals European Origins of Bats 65 Million Years Ago”

    Published on

A comprehensive study of modern bat families’ genomes and fossil bats has resolved the long-standing debate on the origins of bats. The research indicates that the earliest bats likely emerged in Europe approximately 65 million years ago, as detailed in a recent study published in the journal Nature.

Previously, there were discussions among scientists about potential origins in Asia, Africa, or North America due to limited fossil evidence. Sonja Vernes, the paper’s senior author and director of the Bat1K consortium, highlighted the global dispersal of bats over millions of years, owing to their flying abilities.

By analyzing genomes from 103 bat species and 44 bat fossils, researchers uncovered that ancient bats had 26 chromosomes and first appeared after the extinction of dinosaurs. The study revealed that echolocation developed early in bat evolution, with the fossil bat Vielasia, from 50 million years ago, showing bone structures indicative of echolocation.

The research also established the interrelation of the 21 bat families, which collectively represent about a fifth of living mammal species worldwide. The scientists involved in the study, including 137 co-authors from 64 countries, collaborated to analyze the genetic makeup of bats to explore their longevity and viral resistance.

The study’s findings, now publicly available, aim to unveil the reasons behind bats’ exceptional lifespan and disease resistance, potentially leading to innovative healthcare treatments inspired by bats. The research sheds light on the unique vocal communication learning process in bats and the significance of preserving genetic information for future studies on echolocation and other distinctive bat traits.

The initiative to sequence bat genomes globally is anticipated to drive further research into bat genetics and conservation efforts, aiding in understanding the intricate history and evolution of bats on Earth. The broader scientific community views this endeavor as a significant leap in genetic research, akin to previous genome projects for other species like primates, showcasing the immense potential for unraveling complex evolutionary questions related to bat biology.
