“Bald Range Fire Damages 150 Structures, Evacuees Return”

    Published on

The most recent updates on the Bald Range fire reveal that around 150 structures have suffered damage or destruction, as reported by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. Evacuees from the Summerland area have started to return, with officials expecting more returns in the upcoming days. The B.C. Wildfire Service anticipates a shift in firefighting efforts towards the northwest due to forecasted hotter and drier weather conditions.

As per the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, an estimated 150 structures have been impacted by the Bald Range fire, with approximately 40 of these within Summerland’s jurisdiction. The types of structures affected remain unclear, and efforts are underway to contact the property owners. Damage assessments in Summerland have been completed, allowing residents to gradually return, with a portion of previously evacuated properties now on alert status.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes mentioned that the fire is moving away from the town, enabling some residents to come back. However, he emphasized the need for vigilance as fire conditions can change rapidly. The BCWS is actively addressing hot spots in Summerland, focusing on containing the fire perimeter close to residential areas. Residents should anticipate the fire’s progression northwestward into forested regions amid worsening weather conditions.

Despite the challenges, residents are gradually returning to their homes, facing a mix of emotions. A winemaker, Roie Manoff, described the fire’s impact as brutal, emphasizing the need for preparedness and reliable information dissemination. Meanwhile, Connie Denesiuk expressed a mix of relief and sadness upon returning home, empathizing with those still awaiting news about their properties.

The BCWS warned of lingering smoke in central and southern B.C. due to light winds, with hotter and drier conditions expected in the province. The agency also highlighted air quality concerns in certain regions affected by wildfire smoke. International assistance, including firefighters from Australia and other Canadian provinces, has been enlisted to combat the fires across B.C.

The situation remains dynamic, with the Bald Range fire spanning over 212 square kilometers and other significant wildfires affecting various regions of the province. The challenges persist, with ongoing efforts to manage the fires and support affected communities.
