A massive sinkhole opened up in front of a luxurious coastal mansion in Malibu, reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage. The incident led to a gas leak early in the morning, triggering a response from authorities and utility services. SoCalGas managed to control the leak after a few hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in the vicinity to prevent coastal erosion.
Measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, the sinkhole extended into the roadway, prompting officials to declare a local emergency and evacuate 31 properties in the area. Despite attempts to reach out for comments, representatives for Cage remained silent. Property records indicated that the mansion was sold in 2024, with the previous owner confirming Cage as the buyer to The New York Times.
The mansion suffered damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area due to the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which had transitioned into a tropical storm. The City of Malibu highlighted the incident as part of broader regional coastal challenges, mentioning ongoing monitoring of coastal erosion in various vulnerable points along the coast.
Situated between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood faced the sinkhole incident. Cage, aged 62, recently appeared in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator. With a career spanning over 100 films, Cage garnered an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
