Five high-ranking Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that disrupt international peace, according to Canada’s foreign affairs minister. “Ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global trade and energy security. The sanctions imposed today target individuals who undermine these principles and pose a threat to global economic and energy security,” stated Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand on Friday. Canada has urged Iran to de-escalate and uphold international navigation rights.
The sanctions specifically target senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for engaging in actions that jeopardize a critical international waterway, as per a press release from Global Affairs Canada. The sanctioned individuals are Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and a senior IRGC official; Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, a parliamentarian and head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee; Shahram Irani, the commander of Artesh, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s navy; and Hamid Hosseini, the chair of the board of directors and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.
Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities within Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic structures, according to Global Affairs Canada. The move comes amidst mounting pressure to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, as a peace agreement reached in June has yet to materialize. Since the onset of the war in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, President Donald Trump has vacillated between threats of escalation and assertions of an impending peace deal.
Iran has sought to leverage control over the strait to exert pressure on Washington, having targeted some vessels attempting to pass through the strategic waterway that previously facilitated a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas transportation. Trump has urged allies to assist in safeguarding this critical global oil shipping route. Canada, along with seven other countries, issued a joint statement in March calling on Iran to cease all efforts to impede commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and expressed willingness to contribute to reopening it.
Despite assertions of success in diminishing Iran’s military capabilities through U.S. and Israeli strikes, disruptions to shipping persist. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth indicated that the U.S. military could sustain a naval presence in the region indefinitely to enforce its blockade of Iran. With mounting pressure to end the conflict as fuel prices weigh on his approval ratings ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, Trump faces challenges on multiple fronts. The global economy continues to suffer, with the International Energy Agency forecasting a 4.3 million barrels per day decline in global oil supply this year.
