“Director Matt Johnson Delve into Anthony Bourdain’s Early Life”

    Published on

Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared calm and collected a mere four days before his wedding and eight days prior to commencing filming for his upcoming movie. Sporting a casual T-shirt and sweatpants, he arrived at Toronto’s Revue Cinema for an interview with CBC News regarding “Tony,” a highly anticipated biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s iconic status and tragic passing in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in narrating his story, mentioning his lack of prior attachment to Bourdain’s persona or reputation.

Initially not planning to create a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays the lead role in the movie. Their shared views on various issues prompted Johnson to delve into exploring these themes collaboratively. The script, inspired by Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” focuses on a pivotal summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where Bourdain began his culinary journey as a young chef.

By centering the narrative on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson aimed to sidestep the pressure of portraying the older, established Bourdain familiar to many. Emphasizing the complexities of Bourdain’s youth, including his relationships and self-perception, the film seeks to resonate with audiences beyond idolizing the late chef. Scheduled for screening nationwide on August 14, “Tony” offers a unique perspective on Bourdain’s early life, portrayed by Sessa under Johnson’s direction.

The movie, distributed by A24, not “A24/Elevation” as previously credited, captures a significant chapter in Bourdain’s life, providing insight into the experiences that shaped the renowned culinary figure.
