DNA Analysis Confirms Bear in Maple Ridge Attack

    Published on

Following an intensive examination of evidence, collection of new evidence, and DNA analysis, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service has verified that the bear hunted on August 9 is indeed the bear responsible for attacking a three-year-old girl while she was playing on her family’s deck in Maple Ridge. Authorities are currently still on the lookout for the black bear that assaulted the young girl after confirming that the bear the RCMP eliminated was not the culprit.

The incident occurred when the girl was playing on her family’s deck, and one of her parents intervened and drove the animal away. Despite police efforts, the bear returned multiple times that day, leading to its shooting by officers to ensure public safety after displaying signs of aggression. The bear fled into a wooded area post the shooting. A necropsy performed on the bear revealed that it was not the one responsible for the attack.

The girl, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was promptly taken to the hospital by the RCMP. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service’s predator attack team is currently active on-site, urging the public to steer clear of the area.

Wildlife veterinarian Ken Macquisten mentioned that the erroneous killing of the bear wasn’t surprising, emphasizing that police officers lack the expertise in bear behavior possessed by conservation officers. He highlighted the potential danger posed by injuring a bear rather than killing it, as an injured bear tends to be more hazardous. Lesley Fox, the executive director of wildlife conservation group The Fur-Bearers, stressed the importance of making informed decisions under pressure, emphasizing the need for proper evidence and scientific methods.

Maple Ridge RCMP justified their actions, stating that the decision to eliminate the bear was made to prevent further harm or loss of life. They acknowledged the significance of the loss of wildlife and assured that such decisions are never taken lightly. The department is committed to reviewing incidents to explore improvements in training or equipment to enhance officer and public safety. The Conservation Officer Service reiterated that predator attacks are a top priority and emphasized their collaborative efforts with law enforcement partners across the province.
