“Prince Harry, Celebs Ordered to Pay $17.9M in Legal Fees”

    Published on

Prince Harry and other well-known individuals have been ordered by London’s High Court to pay an interim sum of £9.54 million ($17.9 million Cdn) toward the legal expenses of the Daily Mail’s publisher following their unsuccessful privacy lawsuits. Judge Matthew Nicklin recently dismissed the case brought by Prince Harry and others, refuting claims of unlawful activities by the Mail newspapers, such as phone hacking.

Among the prominent figures suing Associated Newspapers were singer Elton John and his spouse David Furnish, along with actors Sadie Frost and Elizabeth Hurley. Former Liberal Democratic MP Simon Hughes and anti-racism activist Doreen Lawrence, whose son Stephen was killed in 1993, were also claimants in the lawsuit.

Nicklin criticized the claimants’ case handling, stating that serious allegations were based on speculative grounds. He emphasized that the conduct was highly unreasonable, leading to the ruling in favor of Associated Newspapers.

Associated Newspapers expressed satisfaction with the court ruling, calling it a significant win for their journalism. The remaining amount must be paid on an indemnity basis, meaning that Prince Harry and the other claimants are obliged to contribute to the legal costs without the publisher having to justify the expenses.

During a hearing in July, it was disclosed that Associated had accumulated legal fees of £34.5 million ($64.7 million Cdn), whereas the claimants were covered by an insurance policy limited to £16 million ($30 million Cdn). The claimants’ lawyer, Nicholas Bacon, criticized Associated’s legal bill as excessive compared to the agreed budget.

The possibility of an appeal by the claimants remains uncertain. Prince Harry’s spokesperson refrained from commenting on the recent ruling. The prince had previously described the court defeat as a clear injustice.

In a surprising move, Prince Harry and Meghan announced their plans to return to the UK with their children after residing in southern California for the past six years. This decision comes amidst the conclusion of the legal battle with tabloid publishers over privacy violations.

The court case marks the conclusion of a series of lawsuits filed by Prince Harry against tabloid publishers for using unethical tactics. In a previous ruling, Prince Harry was awarded £140,600 (about $240,430 Cdn) after being found to be a victim of phone hacking and other illicit information gathering by journalists.

The article also mentions Prince Harry’s testimony in court, where he became the first British royal to provide evidence at a trial in over a century. Additionally, the Rupert Murdoch-led News Group in the UK issued a formal apology to Prince Harry for the phone hacking and misuse of private information by journalists.
