A company in Saskatchewan is actively drilling for hydrogen in a bid to demonstrate its viability for large-scale commercial extraction from natural deposits, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling for its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, aiming to establish the world’s first major commercial natural hydrogen system.
The company’s president, Chad Levesque, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. Highlighting the need for a more sustainable sourcing method, Levesque pointed out the potential of natural hydrogen in addressing ecological concerns.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas used for fuel and electricity generation, is lauded for its emission-free combustion properties, making it a desirable energy source for sectors like transportation and steelmaking. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen, known as grey hydrogen, is currently produced from fossil fuels without effective emissions reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions.
Contrastingly, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a cleaner alternative but remains economically challenging. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a promising solution as it can be extracted with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging existing drilling techniques used in the extraction of natural gas and helium.
The formation of natural hydrogen underground occurs through processes like serpentinization and radioactive decay, leading to the creation of hydrogen without the need for energy-intensive industrial procedures. While the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits, including those in Saskatchewan and other Canadian regions, signifies a potential energy breakthrough, challenges such as extraction complexities and economic viability remain to be addressed.
Max Power Mining’s ongoing exploration at the Lawson Complex aims to assess the quantity and accessibility of natural hydrogen reserves, with data collection ongoing to evaluate the feasibility of commercial extraction.
