The Pan Pacific championships witnessed divergent outcomes for Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later clinched a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team. These marked her fourth and fifth medals at the championships. Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, coming in second after American Gretchen Walsh.

In contrast, McIntosh faced disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event. The 19-year-old, a world-record holder, surprisingly failed to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment during the morning heats. McIntosh expressed frustration and took full responsibility for missing the final, vowing not to repeat the error.

McIntosh rebounded by securing a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle and a gold in the 400m individual medley. Meanwhile, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, from Toronto, won his first international gold in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the event.

Ruck continued her success by leading Canada to a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay, alongside teammates Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert, and Leilani Fack. The U.S. women’s team secured gold, while the Australian team took silver. The Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium finish, coming in fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
