“U.S. Ambassador Condemns Israeli Settler Siege as Terror”

    Published on

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has strongly criticized the actions of Israeli settlers who besieged a Palestinian American family’s home in the West Bank, labeling it as a “horrific act of terror.” The settlers have been gathering near the residence in Qusra village since Sunday, harassing the occupants and impeding their movements despite efforts by the Israeli military to intervene.

The group of settlers, including dozens of individuals, has engaged in aggressive behavior such as throwing stones, attempting to demolish a nearby stone wall, and blocking the residents from leaving, leading to a shortage of essential supplies. Qusai Abu Rida, who along with his teenage son had been defending the house, revealed that they were eventually relocated to another residence by the Israeli military but are still restricted in their movements.

Huckabee stated that at the request of the U.S., Israeli military and police have taken action to remove the individuals responsible for the siege, referring to them as “Israeli terrorists.” He condemned the perpetrators for their actions, emphasizing that such acts of intimidation and harassment are repugnant.

The situation in Qusra has witnessed a spate of violence, with six homes evacuated and seized by Israeli soldiers, including three hilltop residences that were under siege. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) denounced the actions aimed at displacing residents from their homes and land.

In response to the escalating tensions, Israel’s military has conducted operations to restore order, dismantling illegal outposts and detaining individuals involved in the unrest. The Canadian government, among others, has decried the expansion of settlements in the West Bank as a violation of international law.

The recent incidents in Qusra have drawn widespread condemnation, with human rights organizations and foreign governments expressing alarm over the surge in settler violence. Critics have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration of tolerating attacks by settlers, while the Israeli military has labeled the siege as “illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable.”

The village of Qusra, located in a volatile area of the West Bank, has been a focal point of tensions, with previous incidents including arson attacks on a mosque and fatal clashes resulting in casualties on both sides. The construction of illegal outposts by settlers, supported by Israel but criticized internationally, has further complicated efforts to establish a Palestinian state in the region.

Palestinians aspire to include the West Bank in a future state, while many settlers advocate for Israeli sovereignty over the entire area citing historical, religious, and security justifications. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-rooted complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
