“Concertgoers Face Lengthy Delays at Calgary Show”

    Published on

Amandeep Walia eagerly anticipated the performances of Ne-Yo and Akon in Calgary for months. However, he and his wife faced extensive delays at the Scotiabank Saddledome, both for entry and the start of the show. Walia expressed surprise at the significant delay, estimating the night’s expenses at around $700, which included tickets, a babysitter, and food.

Attendees with floor and lower level seats were confined to the concourse as the venue was still being set up, leading to a lack of organization and potential safety concerns, according to Walia. The concert, initially scheduled for 8 p.m., was postponed to 9 p.m., eventually starting at approximately 10:45 p.m.

Despite the delay, Walia acknowledged the performance itself was fantastic. However, he lamented missing out on the full experience due to the late start, which other cities had enjoyed. This incident is not isolated, as other high-profile shows this summer, such as Jay-Z’s final Yankee Stadium concert and Harry Styles’ show in Mexico City, also experienced delays, prompting questions about what concert tickets guarantee.

Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl highlighted that ticket holders have limited rights, mainly guaranteeing the purchased seat and a show to some extent. Changes in event schedules and artist delays are common clauses in ticket terms and conditions, leaving consumers with little recourse when faced with lengthy delays.

Ashish Sharma from the Consumers Council of Canada noted the lack of statutory rights for customers in cases of significant concert delays. He emphasized the importance of prompt communication with attendees in such circumstances, considering the logistical challenges concertgoers may face.

As consumers increasingly invest in live entertainment, issues like delays impact not just ticket costs but also expenses for parking, food, accommodation, travel, and time off work. While Live Nation and Ticketmaster acknowledged fan frustration over delays, they indicated that late performances do not automatically entitle ticket holders to refunds.

Dahl suggested that consumers might have more influence through public pressure than through legal contracts in addressing delayed concerts. He emphasized that artists’ reputations could suffer if delays are not rectified promptly.

Reflecting on the experience, Walia believed that while Ne-Yo and Akon delivered a good show, compensation in the form of a rebate or credit toward future events could have mitigated the impact of the delay.
