Preserved Human Remains in Online Market Raise Health Concerns
A recent study highlights the existence of a global online market for preserved human remains, a niche interest that researchers warn could pose health risks. Lead author Kirsty Squires and her team examined 128 online posts from 2015 to 2025 showcasing human and animal remains for sale.
According to Squires, mummified heads, hands, and feet were commonly featured in these posts. The researchers caution that mummified body parts may contain dormant microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and yeast, which could lead to health issues if mishandled.
Improper storage conditions, as seen in some online images, can accelerate the deterioration of remains. Unlike in museums where mummies are kept under controlled environmental conditions, individuals storing these remains in homes or garages may unknowingly release fungal spores or bacteria into the air when handling them.
To mitigate risks, Squires emphasizes the importance of using protective equipment when handling human remains. Some mummified body parts may also contain toxic chemicals like arsenic and mercury from historical embalming practices.
While the study does not cite specific cases of illness from handling these remains, historical incidents like the deaths of conservation scientists in 1973 due to inhaling mould spores serve as cautionary tales. Ethical concerns surrounding the trade of human remains prompt calls for stricter regulations, with some advocating for a ban on the online sale of such items.
In Canada, researchers identified 11 online posts related to human remains trading. Digital archaeology expert Shawn Graham notes the lack of meaningful regulations in Canada’s trade of human remains and advocates for legislation similar to the proposed U.K. bill aiming to prohibit online sales of human remains.
As discussions around the ethical implications of trading in human remains continue, the study underscores the importance of addressing potential health hazards associated with this practice.
