Former child actors push for better protections after tragic deaths

    Published on

Former child actors are demanding improved protections for young performers in Hollywood following the recent death of Hayden Panettiere. Personal accounts from ex-child actors like Anna Paquin and Melissa Gilbert have shed light on the challenges of fame and mental health issues faced during their early careers. Panettiere’s recent passing at 36 has reignited conversations about mental health struggles and substance abuse highlighted in her memoir released this year.

In a similar vein, Daveigh Chase, known for voicing Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” passed away at 35 due to complications from AIDS and substance abuse, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Michelle Trachtenberg, remembered for roles in “Harriet the Spy” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died at 39 from complications related to diabetes and a previous liver transplant.

Paquin, who won an Academy Award at 11 for “The Piano,” emphasized the need for better protective measures for child actors, highlighting the premature sexualization of young performers on set. Gilbert echoed these concerns, stating that child actors are often exploited due to the pressure to perform without question, leading to tragic outcomes.

The industry’s failure to adequately address these issues has prompted calls for action. Veterans like Paquin and Gilbert are urging former child actors to unite and advocate for themselves, suggesting the formation of support groups and meetings with network heads. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has defended its efforts in protecting young performers, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive safeguards in contracts.

Meanwhile, Raquel Lee, a former child actor featured in the documentary “Quiet on Set,” has come forward with her own abuse allegations. Lee filed a lawsuit against Disney, alleging assault and harassment by a former employee during her teen years. These revelations underscore the ongoing fight for improved protections and support for child actors in the entertainment industry.
