“Obsession” Surpasses $500M at Box Office

    Published on

The movie “Obsession” has captivated audiences worldwide, mirroring the intense fixation of its murderous girlfriend character. According to recent reports from The Wrap, the horror film has surpassed the $500 million mark at the global box office, making it the first original film of the 2020s to achieve this milestone.

“Obsession” has outperformed Pixar’s animated hit “Elemental” from 2023, which grossed $494.6 million globally, establishing itself as the highest-grossing original movie in the post-pandemic era, as per The Express Tribune. Despite its modest budget of $750,000, the film has become the most successful movie ever made for under $1 million in the U.S.

Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, “Obsession” premiered in theaters on May 15 and has seen a consistent increase in weekly grosses, a feat not seen since “E.T.” By the end of its U.S. theatrical run on Aug. 14, the film had earned $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million internationally, bringing its total earnings to $501.5 million and counting.

The movie’s success extends beyond financial achievements, as it has become the highest-grossing festival acquisition in history, following Focus Features’ acquisition after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The commercial triumph of “Obsession” has opened up new opportunities for its cast members, with lead actors Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston landing roles in major upcoming projects.

With the phenomenal success of “Obsession,” director Curry Barker is already gearing up for his next venture. Barker is currently working on a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” in which he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
