Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current season in the Saudi Pro League could mark the end of his illustrious career. The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, which he joined in December 2022, is set to expire next June, with no plans for an extension.
In an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo expressed that this season may be his final one in professional football as he aims to leave behind a remarkable legacy. The Portuguese forward, known for his remarkable tally of 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
Looking ahead, Ronaldo shared his post-football plans, mentioning a diverse range of activities to keep himself occupied. He emphasized the importance of filling the void that football’s absence might leave by engaging in various pursuits such as travel, playing padel, and enjoying the fruits of his hard-earned success over his 25-year career marked by significant sacrifices.
The 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player, during which he has clinched five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. His exceptional performance last season, with 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to victory in the Saudi Arabian league, securing his first trophy since joining the club and the first league title for Al-Nassr since 2019.
Despite missing Al-Nassr’s season opener following his wedding, Ronaldo remains a significant presence for the team, as noted by Al-Nassr coach Ange Postecoglou. The coach highlighted Ronaldo’s importance to the squad and emphasized the need for a quick recovery as the team faces upcoming fixtures, including a potential match against Al-Diriyah in the King’s Cup.
Ronaldo’s reflections on potentially retiring come in the wake of Lionel Messi’s recent statements about considering his future in football following his father’s passing. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainty about continuing to play the sport that has defined much of his life, indicating a possible nearing end to his illustrious career.
