“Russia Launches Deadly Aerial Assault on Kyiv”

    Published on

In a nighttime aerial assault that lasted for hours, Russia launched numerous missiles and drones on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its surrounding areas, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as per officials on Thursday.

Over the recent months, Moscow’s forces have escalated their ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only weapon capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently appealed for additional Patriot interceptors from other countries. However, global stockpiles are low due to ongoing conflicts, such as the Iran war and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s invasion.

The intense overnight bombardment by Russia also included cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding further pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses, according to the Ukrainian air force.

Explosions reverberated throughout the city during the dark hours, with Kyiv being the main target. However, impacts were observed at 28 locations across the country, with approximately 40 individuals sustaining injuries, as confirmed by Zelenskyy. Air raid alerts persisted until dawn.

Zelenskyy described the attack as “massive” on social media, emphasizing that Russia meticulously planned the assault by deploying various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.

Additionally, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the assault targeted a Kyiv industrial site responsible for producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles. The strike also hit sites associated with drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center.

As the attack unfolded, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance to monitor the situation closely. NATO allies, including Polish and Spanish military aircraft, were deployed to safeguard their respective airspace.

Meanwhile, Romania’s Defense Ministry disclosed that an unidentified drone crashed near its border with Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia’s actions, stating that the country is testing the resolve of NATO and its partners, violating the sovereignty of neighboring states, and escalating the risks associated with the conflict far beyond Ukraine.

Despite the ongoing hostilities, Ukraine continues to face challenges in acquiring missile defense systems. The Associated Press analysis revealed a significant decline in U.S. Patriot inventory, necessitating efforts to bridge the gap through increased production capacity.

Political signals from Washington have also fluctuated, with initial intentions to provide Ukraine with licensing for Patriot production. However, uncertainties remain regarding the feasibility and timeline for initiating production in Ukraine.

Residential areas in Kyiv, including the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi districts, bore the brunt of the overnight strikes, resulting in damage to residential buildings, medical facilities, and educational institutions. Emergency responders rescued individuals trapped under debris, with reports of significant destruction.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has witnessed both sides engaging in drone and missile attacks, with neither party gaining a decisive advantage along the extensive front line.
