“Nick Reiner Formally Charged With Parents’ Murder”

    Published on

A Los Angeles County grand jury has formally charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, alleging that he deliberately ambushed them. The indictment was handed down on July 20 after a secretive grand jury session and was made public when Nick Reiner, aged 32, entered a plea of not guilty.

The victims, renowned Hollywood figure Rob Reiner and his spouse Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood residence on December 14. Nick Reiner was promptly arrested and formally accused two days later.

The grand jury indictment signifies a significant advancement toward a trial, circumventing the need for a public preliminary hearing in California, where evidence is typically disclosed. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman condemned the act as a severe breach of trust by someone the victims deeply cared for.

The indictment discloses limited new information regarding the case, emphasizing the lying in wait charge, which makes Reiner eligible for the death penalty, although the decision to pursue it remains pending. The document mentions that a knife was used in the attack, aligning with prior reports of the couple’s stabbing.

Despite the ongoing speculation, key details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the crime have not been publicly addressed by prosecutors, maintaining a high level of secrecy around the case. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to disclose the autopsy findings but is restrained by a court order.

Nick Reiner is currently embroiled in a legal battle to access funds from a trust established by his parents, claiming it is crucial for his defense. The trust, holding assets worth at least $1.5 million US, has been withheld from Reiner by the overseeing trustees, leading to his petition to secure legal representation for his defense.

A court hearing to address Reiner’s petition is scheduled for the upcoming week. The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, providing legal representation for Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment. The legal process in California allows for cases to proceed through a public preliminary hearing or a grand jury session, with the latter maintaining a veil of secrecy until the indictment is unsealed.

Rob Reiner, an accomplished actor turned director, had a prolific career in the entertainment industry, creating iconic films from the ’80s and ’90s. His son, Nick Reiner, co-wrote a film with him in 2015, drawing from personal struggles with addiction. The family tragedy has left their loved ones grappling with the loss, with the elder son, Jake Reiner, describing it as an incomprehensible nightmare.
