“Retired Journalist’s Inspiring Journey Post-Throat Surgery”

    Published on

Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, recounts his experience as a heavy consumer of Boost, a meal replacement drink, for a period of five months. This was not in the form of beer but rather as a nutritional necessity post his throat surgery in mid-July. The surgery involved the removal of cancerous tissue from his throat, leaving him reliant on Boost and puréed food for sustenance, resulting in a significant weight loss.

His journey to recovery was marked by multiple swallow tests to assess his ability to safely consume solid food, with challenges arising due to reduced throat functionality post-surgery. Despite setbacks, his healthcare team at St. Clare’s Hospital remained dedicated to his well-being, incorporating radiation treatment and chemotherapy into his recovery plan.

During his treatment, Glenn humorously imagined scenarios, finding solace in dark humor while enduring radiation sessions twice daily. Despite the struggles, he diligently practiced swallowing exercises, leading to significant progress by late November. His improved swallowing ability granted him access to intensive swallow therapy, marking a pivotal moment as he transitioned back to consuming solid foods.

With guidance from speech language pathologists, Glenn embarked on a new culinary journey, relishing simple pleasures like a banana and gradually reintroducing soft foods into his diet. While challenges persist, such as reduced saliva production and occasional coughing, Glenn remains optimistic about his progress and looks forward to enjoying a more varied diet in the future.

Through perseverance and the support of his healthcare team, Glenn’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of rehabilitation post-cancer treatment.
