Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, according to a statement from the RCMP. The incident was reported after the toddlers were taken to the nursing station of the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation on Wednesday afternoon. Family members found the boys in a nearby lake, and they were quickly transported to the nursing station where they were pronounced dead.

Authorities believe that the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake without any foul play suspected. The grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, Alex McDougall, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the two young members of the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation. The community, along with neighboring areas, has come together to support the grieving family during this difficult time.

Despite efforts by the family to prevent direct access to the water by building a fence, the tragic incident occurred. Garden Hill Anisininew Nation, situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, is now mourning the loss of the brothers. The tragic event adds to the unfortunate statistic of at least five drowning deaths reported in Manitoba in 2026, as confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
