“Mayor Calls for Police Action on School Gun Violence”

    Published on

Fort St. John’s mayor is urging for increased provincial police support to address a recent rise in gun violence near schools in northeastern British Columbia. The plea follows what the RCMP suspects to be the third targeted shooting at a residence in the city on Friday night. Mayor Lilia Hansen is advocating for the deployment of B.C.’s gang task force to tackle the escalating violence.

Expressing deep concern, Hansen emphasized the urgent need for a more robust police presence to combat the escalating situation. The RCMP is actively investigating the series of shootings that commenced on July 22, with at least one individual reportedly injured and subsequently charged.

Sgt. Jaime Moffat highlighted that the detachment’s serious crime and street enforcement units, in collaboration with frontline officers, are diligently working to apprehend the suspects and prevent further violence. The community is on edge as the incidents have occurred in close proximity to local schools, prompting growing apprehension among residents as the new school year approaches.

Neighbours, like father-of-four Thomas Whitton, expressed shock and worry over the recent surge in violence, especially given its proximity to their homes and children. Whitton recounted how his children had walked past the targeted home just an hour before the shooting. As the investigation continues, the community is calling for authorities to allocate necessary resources to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of the residents, particularly with the imminent return of students to school.

Helen Gilbert, chair of the local board of education for School District 60, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and safety measures as the school year nears. The community remains vigilant as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to address the concerning escalation of violence in Fort St. John.
