A unique marvel in the natural realm, the narwhal tusk can grow up to three meters long and is a straight upper tooth that emerges through the whale’s lip on the left side. Unlike other mammal tusks, it grows perfectly straight without any curves. An international team of researchers has uncovered the mystery behind its straight growth, attributing it to the tusk’s distinctive pattern of opposing spirals.
The discovery, detailed in a recent publication in the journal Nature Communications, unravels how the two opposing spirals—one clockwise and the other counterclockwise—contribute to the tusk’s straight alignment. This investigation was sparked by a collaboration between researchers delving into the handedness of molecules and the observation that narwhal tusks exhibit a consistent leftward spiral pattern.
Comprising biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, the research team employed advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to unveil the inner structure of the tusks. They identified two opposing spirals: a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed spiral in the inner dentine layer. This revelation not only explains the straight growth of narwhal tusks but also presents insights that could enhance the understanding of the structural principles of human bones.
Renowned narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia from Harvard University lauded the study for delving into the enigmatic narwhal tooth, which he deems as the most extraordinary on the planet. While he emphasized the multifunctional nature of teeth, Nweeia’s previous research highlighted that the primary role of narwhal tusks is sensory rather than defensive or related to feeding.
Looking ahead, Nweeia advocates for more comprehensive research on narwhals, emphasizing the importance of off-season studies and collaboration with Indigenous communities. He underscores the value of integrating scientific inquiry with traditional knowledge to gain a holistic understanding of these elusive marine creatures. Interdisciplinary collaboration, as showcased in this study, holds the key to unlocking new insights that transcend individual fields of expertise.
