“Study Reveals Heavy Rainfall as Major Threat to Cocoa Production”

    Published on

A recent peer-reviewed study highlights a significant threat to cocoa production that is often overlooked amid the Halloween frenzy over bite-sized chocolate treats. The study, led by environmental fellow Anna Lea Albright at Harvard University, reveals that heavy rainfall poses a more substantial weather risk to cocoa cultivation than heat and drought, contrary to common belief.

Cocoa prices have surged in recent years, with a tonne now priced at around $6,000 US, compared to a range of $2,000 to $3,000 US per tonne since 2014. Factors contributing to this price hike include heavy flooding in West Africa, the world’s largest cocoa-growing region, affecting over two million farmers.

Leslie Agyare, founder of Three Mountains Cocoa in Ghana, expressed the challenges faced by farmers due to excessive rainfall disrupting harvests. As climate change exacerbates extreme rainfall events, the study emphasizes the detrimental impact on cocoa production, a crop cherished by billions worldwide.

The study, focusing on Ghana as the second-largest cocoa producer globally, highlights the adverse effects of extreme rainfall on cocoa yields, particularly during the flowering stage. The research indicates a clear link between heavy rains and lower yields, as moisture-sensitive cocoa flowers and young pods are vulnerable to damage.

Moreover, the study underscores the rise in fungal infections due to wet conditions, impacting cocoa production in countries like Ecuador and Indonesia. The findings suggest a climate signal showing increased intensity of heavy rain events during the wet season, attributed to warmer air holding more moisture.

While El Niño events in West Africa can mitigate extreme rainfall risks but heighten drought concerns, the study emphasizes the urgent need for interventions to safeguard cocoa production. Measures such as fungicide application and improved drainage systems could help mitigate the spread of fungal diseases and protect cocoa crops.

Despite non-climactic threats like aging trees and illegal mining, the study underscores the pressing need for infrastructure investments and innovative solutions to sustain cocoa farming in the face of changing climatic conditions. Experts warn that continued climate shocks could deter future generations from cocoa farming, potentially leading to a shift towards cocoa-free chocolate alternatives.

Companies like Nestlé have already ventured into the cocoa-free chocolate market, partnering with startups to develop alternatives using ingredients like sunflower seeds. These innovations aim to create more resilient and sustainable supply chains, offering a glimpse of a potential future where traditional cocoa farming may face challenges in the wake of climate uncertainties.
